PERSONALITY
Elena is the type of person that cares so much about everything in her life and usually receives the short end of the stick. Luckily, she's learned to deal with it and just keep keeping on. What else is she supposed to do? She's lost so many people that were supposed to be there for her. Her mom. Her dad. Jenna. John. Somehow through it all, she's able to keep her head up high and get through everyday like there is nothing to it. Don't let that fool you though. She does find time to grieve, but she does it differently than most. She finds comfort in writing in her diary. To be able to get her words out on paper makes her feel a lot better.
With Stefan gone, for two years now, it took her a long time to try and return to a normal life. She was insistent on helping Damon look for him, but was always shut down because of her fragile nature of being a human. She tries to spend as much time with her friends, but there is a hole that she can never seem to fill. She believes that Stefan isn't coming back and that Damon has completely forgotten about her with Katherine out of the tomb. Life as she knew it Sophomore year has completely changed. It wasn't as easy as waking up and breathing anymore. It was living with regret and loss and depression. Still though, with all the trauma she's dealt with since meeting the Salvatore brothers, she somehow manages to keep a smile on her face when the occasion calls for it.

HISTORY
Born on June 22 and raised in a quiet little town called Mystic Falls, Elena lived a happy 17 years with her family. Miranda and Grayson Gilbert whom she called mom and dad. Then there is her little brother, Jeremy Gilbert. It all seemed like a normal life. A loving family just living an ordinary life in a historic town. It all changed one night after a party. Elena and her boyfriend at the time, Matt Donovan, had got into a huge fight. After a quick phone call to her parents, they were there to pick her up and take her home. It happened in the blink of an eye and something changed her life forever. While crossing over a bridge, somehow the car lost control and plummeted over the side. The only thing Elena could remember was hitting the water. The next thing she knew she was waking up in a hospital bed. No one could really explain to her exactly how she made it out of the car. After finding out about her own well being, it wasn't long after that she learned her parents did not survive the crash.
Not long after, she and Jeremy started living with their aunt, Jenna Sommers. It was hard to phase life back to what it used to be. Elena started attending school again and just tried to get back into a norm. On the outside, she tried to make everyone think that she was a strong person and had to be there for her brother, but on the inside, well, that's a different story. At first, Elena kept to herself, but it was Bonnie Bennett who brought out the best of her. One morning, walking to class, Elena found herself staring at what seemed to be a new student, someone she had never seen before. Little did she know that he would have a huge impact on what lied ahead.
Stefan Salvatore was his name. The way it just rolled off the tongue made a shiver go up her back sometimes. They had connected by Elena accidentally running into him and then again while she was journaling in the graveyard near he parents graves. One thing led to another and well, Elena was a bit smitten with him. You could say that curiosity kills the cat in this instance. Bonnie had a feeling that something was different about Stefan and express that she needed to be careful around him. Elena didn't see the issue and continued to hang out with him. It was one day that she sought him out and ended up running into his brother Damon Salvatore. The first time meeting him, he dropped the biggest bomb in her lap. He ended up telling her about Stefan's former love, Katherine Pierce. This was devastating news, but it couldn't hurt to try and be normal around him. She was developing feelings to say the least.
After the Night of the Comet Festival, Elena made her way to the Salvatore Boarding House and that's where it happened. The kiss that opened up the door to what seemed to be an amazing adventure. At first, she had doubts about a new relationship seeing as how things ended with Matt. The relationship didn't go over to well with Bonnie. She informed her that Caroline Forbes told her that Stefan actually was trying to take Katherine from Damon. Caroline, at the time seemed to be pretty friendly with Damon. Hearing this news, left her with many questions and trying to get them out of Stefan was difficult. It wasn't until she noticed that Damon had been hurting her friend Caroline that she really began to believe the things that came out of Stefan's mouth.
Day to day life went on. Damon seemed to disappear from the picture, which was odd, but didn't seem out of place. It wasn't until that day at the Mystic Grill that an old man stated he knew Stefan and that he hadn't aged a day. It didn't really phase her that day, but running into him again, he insisted that she do her research about the "attack" of Joseph Salvatore. After doing so, she needed answers as to what exactly she was looking at. Unannounced, she showed up at the Boarding House and demanded answers. After a frantic exit, she made her way home only for Stefan to be there to explain. Oh boy did she get answers. Stefan Salvatore was a vampire and his brother Damon was behind all the attacks around Mystic Falls. Once Elena calmed down, Stefan told her everything. From the relationship with Katherine and how she toyed with the brothers. This was to much. Elena could not be in a relationship with a vampire. Life just got very different from that point forward. The incident with Vicki Donovan and her brother Jeremy was enough to shake anyone. Mistaking Lexi as the other woman in Stefan's life to her death by wooden stake from none other than Damon Salvatore. Stefan began dodging her after Lexi died. It wasn't like she didn't understand, but Stefan put the space between them, not her.
Not long after, Damon explained just exactly why he had come back to Mystic Falls. He had found out Katherine was inside a tomb under the ruins of Fell's Church. After Bonnie destroyed the only hope that Damon seemed to have in getting Kathrine out of the tomb, he became enraged and attacked Bonnie. That's when Stefan stepped in and helped one of her best friends in the world. It was this point that Elena believed that she could be a part of Stefan's dangerous world. Stefan felt different and didn't want to hurt her, but how could they stay apart now?She couldn't help herself and again showed up unannounced at the boarding house. It was that night that she confessed her feelings for Stefan. It would seem that the feelings were very mutual. The two of them made love. It was something she never wanted to end, because when it did, everything changed again. Stefan went for a drink and after plundering a bit came across a picture of Kathrine. This was the first time she had actually seen a picture of her. Confused and heartbroken, she left and hurried home. Elena had to get away.
What better way to do that then taking a road trip to Atlanta, Georgia than none other than Damon. Not the ideal situation in her head, but she needed to put some space between her and Stefan. It was for the best. Honestly thought, she had a great time. After a few drinks, it seemed they weren't alone on their journey. Damon had been on the hunt for the grimoire that Bonnie's ancestor Emily used to encase Katherine in the tomb under Fell's Church. After the attempted kidnapping, she returns to Stefan and learns quite a few things. One, she was adopted. Two, he was the one that saved her from the crash that killed her parents. And three, well, that he loved her. In steps Pearl Zhu, a vampire that had been enclosed in the tomb with Katherine. She had honestly wanted the best for her and her daughter, but the others that followed her had another plan. Stefan was captured by the vigilante vampires that had suffered in the tomb and tortured him as revenge to what happened to them. When Elena found him, he was almost dead. She used her blood to help him not knowing that she had awakened something dark inside him. The lust that seemed to take over just seemed to be to much for him. Thinking he could be her escort to the Founder's Ball, she asked and he accepted.
By saving Stefan from the near death, the blood lust was awakened in him. He had warned her of his past life with it, but Elena never expected it to get as bad as it did. Before the Founder's Ball was over, with Bonnie and Damon's help, they were able to stop Stefan from killing. A fight pursues and Stefan disappears. When is came time for the evenings main dance, there was one problem, he didn't show and instead Damon stepped in for the main dance of the evening. It didn't mean anything thought, or so she thought. To help Stefan, Elena confronts him and before he can do any major damage, Damon locks him in the cells in the boarding house and injects him with vervain. It was heart breaking for Elena to see him go down like this. During the imprisonment, Damon and Elena had time to bond. Elena believes that Stefan can overcome the lust and gives him the opportunity to prove it. In turn, he runs with plans to desiccate himself. It's not until Elena confronts him and tells him to keep fighting that he agrees to try to regain his former self. As much as Elena had wanted things to just calm down and go back to normal, she knew it wouldn't. If it couldn't get any worse, her biological mother Isobel arrives in town and decides to have a conversation with her after all this time. Wasn't much of a loving conversation that one would expect with over 17 years of not knowing who she was. Isobel demanded that she hand over a device. The device that would stop vampires in their tracks. Isobel tells her that she wants the device or people will die. In a panic, she brings the situation to Damon and Bonnie. Bonnie agrees to disable the device and Elena hands it over to Isobel. During the exchange, Isobel expresses to her that Damon is actually in love with her. Unfortunately, she would have to compartmentalize it and come back to it later.
On Founder's Day, the device was activated by none other than her biological father John GIlbert. It seems that Sherrif Forbes and other Founding Council members were aware of what was going on the whole time and used the device to draw out the vampires that currently resided in Mytsic falls. Damon falls victim to the device along with Tyler Lockwood's father and is dragged into a burning building to be extinguished. Stefan saves him and they both get out of dodge for the evening. After the crazy evening, returning home just seemed like a breath of fresh air. Once inside though, she find John stabbed with his fingers cut off laying on the kitchen floor in his own blood. He tries to get something out and tells Elena to look behind her, but nothing was there. The same night, Tyler Lockwood and Caroline Forbes get into a horrible car accident. Seems the same device used to draw out vampires had taken a toll on Tyler as well, but why? Damon tells her that they should talk about what happened the night she found John and is confused as to what he was talking about.
With Kathrine back in the picture now, seeing as she wasn't sealed in the tomb, it only seems that she was around for mischief now. Elena could not let Kathrine get in between Damon and Stefan. Knowing the history of the three, Elena realized that is was only going to get worse moving forward. Emotions between Damon and Stefan become unclear. There is a discover of possible werewolves now in Mystic Falls and all Elena wants is just to get back to normal. She was starting to think it would never happen. The hunt for a moon stone takes places for a ritual that would break a curse in the Lockwood family. All because of a stone is where the story stands now. Elena willing gave herself to Klaus knowing that it was the only way. The stone was a way to end a cycle for Klaus and it was going to take a sacrifice to break it. He even used her aunt, turning her into the very creature like Stefan and Damon. It was over. Using her blood to break the curse, her eyes would close forever. Or so she thought. John sacrificed his life and when she woke up, everything was different. Stefan was gone. Damon was obsessing over getting his brother back. She couldn't blame him. If anything had ever happened to Jeremy, she wouldn't know what to do with herself.
Two years have passed and she can't even remember the last time the Salvatore brothers had given her the time of day. Her group of friends stay small and aside from Caroline, Bonnie, Matt and Tyler, life is quiet again in Mystic Falls. Senior year approaches and there's no telling what the new school year will bring.

RP SAMPLE
It seems her mother had volunteered her for one too many things this summer. Just her way of trying to push Elena to do more with her life. She didn't mind helping Mrs. Lockwood by volunteering to clean and organize a few things for the upcoming museum opening, but there was still so much that needed to be done. Exhibits still needed to be built and historical items that the Founder's Council were able to collect needed to be sorted and labeled. She and Bonnie had helped her mom over the weekend go through the attic at the lake house. There were some boxes with old books in them that she wanted to donate. Some of them were handwritten and some were printed. Nothing she really knew about or cared to ask about. So with the boxes in tow, she made her way downtown. The goal was to drop the boxes off and leave before anything else could be asked of her this evening.
Pulling up to the back of the building, she put the car in park and turned it off before getting out. She couldn't see any lights on inside, so hopefully someone had left the door unlocked for her. It's not like they didn't know she was coming. Elena pulled one of the boxes from the back seat and started towards the door. She balanced the box on her knee to reach down and tug on the door. Locked. With a sigh, she went to balance the box once more to grab at her phone in her back pocket. Instead of calling, she just sent a text off to her mother about trying to get inside. While she waited on a response, she headed back to the car to pull out the next box. She could at least get them out and put them by the door until she heard something back.
Walking back towards where she had sat the other box down, she just kind of stacked the other one on top of it. She dusted her hands before looking around where she actually was. Not the ideal way she would like to be spending a Wednesday night. Elena pulled her phone back out to look at the screen. No response still on what to do, but it's not like she had anything else better to do. She knew Bonnie would never stop being there for her, but the way she had been complaining about Matt lately, her best friend needed an evening off. Peering down to the boxes sitting by her feet, she reached down and grabbed one of the leather bound books. She went to untie the bind keeping it closed then just flipped to the first page.
The Journal of Johnathan Gilbert Elena ran her fingers softly over the writing. Flipping to a random page, she would start to read what she could understand. The old cursive could get a little unreadable, but there were some things that she could make out. "I saw her again today, the most beautiful woman in town with a name just as pretty - Pearl" She read out loud. The one line alone made her smile. She had no idea who the woman mentioned was, but the way he wrote about her, there was no doubt they had been in love. As she continued to read, she could feel her phone go off in her pocket with a text, but was too wrapped up in what she was reading to pull away.
